ENERGY PERFORMACE CONTRACT POSTER COMPETITION

Spring 2008

Use your design skills to advertise energy conservation on campus and get paid for your work!

The UI Sustainability Center and UI Facilities will pay students a flat rate of $50 per selected flier to advertise energy conservation on campus. Posters should be fun, whimsical, and attention-catching, with text addressing energy conservation, climate change, and/or reducing the UI carbon footprint. The $50 is intended to cover the effort for designing, printing, and distributing approximately 20 copies of each selected flier on various campus billboards. The competition will run until 20 such fliers have been distributed.

The goal of this project is to win over the hearts and minds of building occupants in favor of sustainability and the ongoing Energy Saving Performance Contract. This performance contract is a major commitment of over thirty million dollars designed to primarily address sustainability issues on campus and most importantly to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. The central message of this information campaign should address the idea of asking building occupants to accept the small inconveniences that may be associated with this effort for the sake of future generations.

In the last few years President White has signed three declarations committing the UI to significantly reduce its carbon emissions; the Talloires Declaration, the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, and a commitment associated with our participation in the Chicago Climate Exchange. All of these commitments will require more than just energy savings, but none can be accomplished without a significant reduction in campus energy usage. The campaign now under way is the cornerstone of efforts to meet UI energy reduction goals.

Additional background information of the UI Energy Savings Performance Contract can be found on the Energy Conservation website, click on the Energy Savings Performance Contract link on the left. However, student posters should not highlight the details of the Performance Contract, but should instead focus on the benefits of energy savings and at winning the support of University students, faculty and staff.
